THE POP-UP THINK TANK POWERED BY R.I.F.T.
During Berlin Fashion Week AW18 we hosted our first ever THINKATHON on behalf of Messe Frankfurt as part of the FASHIONTECH and FASHIONSUSTAIN conferences at Kraftwerk Berlin. The intensive 48-hour “thought marathon” saw 28 participants from 12 countries across Europe, Asia and the US, put into 4 teams to take on 2 challenges set by industry professionals – in this instance Zalando and Fashion Council Germany – under the guidance of 2 coaches to carry out 1 mission: Co-create a sustainable future for fashion.
An exercise in lateral thinking, the multidisciplinary teams consisted of researchers, designers, technicians, entrepreneurs, MA students, policy makers and more, not only from the fashion/textile sphere, but also biotech, robotics, architecture, education, future studies and NGOs. Together they discussed and developed approaches to innovate the global fashion industry by combining the latest developments in sustainability and technology with their respective knowledge and expertise.
The Thinkathon kicked off on 16th January 2018 during the FASHIONTECH conference and concluded the following day with presentations in front of the challenge hosts on the Kraftwerk mainstage at the FASHIONSUSTAIN conference. See below for the challenges set by Zalando and Fashion Council Germany along with a summary of each team’s solutions. You can also watch the team pitches in their entirety and see further images from the Thinkathon in the FASHIONSUSTAIN press material.
Zalando: How can we create an intelligent system that reveals hidden sustainability efforts like non-certified fair trade or the payment of living wages?
Team Yellow – ‘Fashion Sustainability Circle’ with a UX-focused holistic labelling system for sustainability concerns in the fashion industry: Materials, Production, Shipment & Logistics, After Life.
Team Red – ‘Supplier Partnership Platform’ that fosters transparent and trustful relationships between brands, suppliers and consumers by displaying the main sustainability criteria in textile supply chains.
Fashion Council Germany: How can we innovate education and mentorship so that designers embrace new, sustainable technologies?
Team Blue – ‘Free Blues’ an empowering education platform that enables knowledge transfer along the entire value chain while supporting emerging design talent with residencies to shape good practice in the textile industry.
Team Green – ‘Curated Exchange Platform’ a holistic programme including an online platform and physical matchmaking initiatives to empower design students and postgraduates to achieve sustainability goals by using state-of-the art technologies and digital tools.
The Thinkathon was organised and curated by RIFT – Responsible Innovators in Fashion and Textiles – a project co-founded by Sourcebook and Future Fashion Forward as a summit to build bridges between sustainability and innovation within the fashion industry. Previous events have included seminars and panel talks at Munich Fabric Start and Messe Frankfurt’s Techtextil & Texprocess trade fairs.
In a similar vein, Messe Frankfurt and Premium Group brought the FASHIONSUSTAIN and FASHIONTECH conferences to Berlin Fashion Week as a way to explore how technology and sustainability will reframe the fashion industry.
We would like to say a big Thank You to all participants, coaches, Zalando, Fashion Council Germany and Messe Frankfurt for making our first Thinkathon a great success!
